Bulls look forward to Yeovil Cup Game

For many years, when both clubs were in the Conference, games with Yeovil were often some of the best of the season. And whilst the clubs haven't met since 2003, memories of some of those games still remain in supporters minds.

One game that stands out was a Tuesday night end of season clash in 2001 at Huish Park when Hereford United denied Yeovil promotion from the Conference with a fine 3-2 win, the winner coming very late in the game from Ian Rodgerson. Some Yeovil fans didn't take kindly to the defeat that evening and there was some fighting between rival fans after the game ended. The Hereford team that evening was: Cooksey, Clarke, Robinson, James, Sturgess, Parry, Rodgerson, Shirley, Snape, Gavin Williams, Elmes. However two seasons later Yeovil were promoted and are now in League One following a second promotion two seasons ago.

The last Conference game, on March 1st 2003, between the two clubs at Huish Park was a 4-0 win to Yeovil. At Edgar Street earlier that season the Bulls held the Glovers to a 0-0 draw. Also that season Yeovil defeated Hereford 2-1 at Edgar Street in an FA Trophy game. At the games both Chris Weale, who kept goal for the Bulls last Saturday, and former Bull Gavin Williams were regulars for Yeovil and another former Bull Michael McIndoe would have played in all three but was suspended for the first.

In those days Yeovil were able to purchase Hereford's better players who were sold to make ends meet. Gary Johnson was the manager at Yeovil at the time.

Russell Slade, Yeovil's current manager, took over from Johnson when the latter jumped ship to Bristol City. Slade had been manager of Conference side Scarborough and then Grimsby and his appointment at Yeovil was somewhat of a surprise. He's done well as he steered Yeovil to a League One play-off final last May, however they were defeated by Blackpool 2-0.

Slade is expected to bring a strong team to Edgar Street tomorrow. He may be without Scott Guyett who received a head injury in Yeovil's 1-0 defeat at newly promoted Huddersfield last Saturday.

As for Hereford, Wayne Brown should return from injury to keep goal and there could be some other changes. Kris Taylor may be side-lined as he took a knock on Saturday so Ben Smith could feature in the starting line up after being on the bench for the Rotherham game. Smith was on the books at Yeovil for just over three seasons from March 1998 to June 2001. He has twice played for the Bulls against Yeovil and scored in the FA Trophy game against them in January 2003.

Manager Graham Turner may decide to pair new signing Simon Johnson with Steve Guinan or possibly play him on the left wing. He could also drop Trent McClenaham to the bench so as to try out someone else in the right back position. McClenaham is expected to miss several games this autumn because of international duty.

Turner is looking forward to the game as Yeovil are old rivals

"We have had some cracking matches against them in the past and I think that it's a game to whet the appetite," he said.

As there are no provisions for replays, the game can go to extra-time and/or penalties.
