Murfin involved with Stags radio deal

The deal between Mansfield Town FC and the local commercial radio station Mansfield 103.2 (reported earlier on Bulls News) is beleived to be the first agreement where a football club has given over control of its sales and marketing operations.

It is reported that the deal could raise up to an extra £500,000 for the club.

The radio station will sell advertising space, hire out the executive box for social functions and conferences and may even using Field Mill as a venue for mammoth pop concerts.

Recently there have been problems at Mansfield with supporters calling for the chief executive Keith Haslam to resign. Banners were seen at Edgar Street when Mansfield were the vistors last January. This deal will take away some of his responibilities from him.

Tony Delahunty, the manager of the radio station, said: "We want the people to come to Field Mill. Some are staying away because of their grievances with the chief executive, so we have set up a committee to handle the revenue from this. And the fans will have a say on how that money is spent."

As part of the deal the station will provide exclusive match commentary from Stags' away games next season.

However, Mr Delahunty stressed that home matches would be broadcast live only on the club's own Stagsworld website.

Hereford United supporters may be interested to learn that Muff Murfin is one of the directors of Mansfield 103.2. He is also a director of two, soon to be three, commercial radio stations that can be heard in Herefordshire.

Whether he will come up with a similar deal for Hereford United remains to be seen.
