Seven thousand a week on wages at Halifax

Comparisons between Conference clubs and their spending on wages is often difficult.

Most clubs do not issue detailed accounts so unless a chairman or manager reveals the figures they may be hard to trace.

In the case of Hereford United, it is easy to see what is spent, as the figures are available.

Chris Wilder, the Halifax manager, has mentioned the subject in an interview with the Yorkshire Post this morning.

"As far as I am concerned, with our resources the record of this football club stands up against any other in the Conference.

"I know some fans feel that just because we are a former Football League club we should be competing for the title, but in reality there are a lot of clubs who have never been in the League and yet are very strong financially."

The article says that Halifax spend £7,000 a week on wages. It does not say whether that includes the pay of Wilder. It mentions some of the other clubs in the promotion race.

They include the likes of Exeter and Burton Albion, both having enjoyed a lucrative FA Cup run that culminated in meeting Manchester United live on television, and several others with generous playing budgets, including Hereford, who went above Halifax on goal difference in midweek.

And then there is Chris Wilder's Halifax who, as recently as last season, were having to beg and borrow training facilities as far afield as Sheffield and Manchester due to being unable to find facilities in their home town.

Finance remains a struggle with Halifax's weekly spending of £7,000 on wages paling into comparison with the vast majority of their rivals, Carlisle United winning promotion via the play-offs last season with a reported budget three times what the Shaymen are able to pay this time around.

This lack of resources was brought home to Wilder last weekend when former Bradford winger Summerbee lined up for Tamworth, one of only two clubs in the Conference purporting to still be part-time.

Halifax had tried to sign Summerbee earlier this month but were unable to match the offer from a club sitting third bottom in the table.

Despite Wilder suggesting that Hereford has a generous playing budget, the last available figures say that the amount spent on wages and salaries at the club, less directors pay, was just over £480,000 and that includes several people in administration and social security costs.
