It's a long way to Cambridge on a Friday.

Given typical Friday night road conditions, and the thought according to the Official Site that waterproof clothing could be needed, it was surprising that so many Hereford United fans decided to get to Cambridge last night for the Cup-tie.

Delays on the M42 for Herefordshire based fans on the journey to Cambridge and the closure of the A14 on the return journey meant some fans had to take long detours. Some used the M40 instead.

The ground itself was quite easy to find, but for those delayed, parking meant a side street.

Hereford United were given the one end behind the goal, completly open to the elements. That wasn't a problem, as conditions were dry and not that cold, as there was little breeze.

But unless one was at the front against the barrier, vision was poor. Considering the stand next to the Hereford end wasn't full, it was a shame this area couldn't have been made available for some Bulls supporters.

The condition of the pitch was good. It had been virually dry at Cambridge since Wednesday, so this should have helped Hereford.

Catering, too, was better than at many Conference grounds. And a word of praise for the match programme, good value at £2.

However the practice of playing games a long way from Edgar Street on Friday evening needs to be questioned. There is little doubt that had the game been played on either Saturday or Sunday, the Bulls support would have been higher.

Graham Turner has acknowleged that the fans count. They are often said to be the twelfth man especially at away games. Given the wilingness of many to travel to support the Bulls, perhaps Turner should try to avoid long journeys on Fridays.

For some of us, it took over ten hours from leaving home to returning.
