Aberystwyth friendly tomorrow evening.

Hereford United return to Aberystwyth tomorrow evening for a friendly against the Welsh Premier League Club with a start at 7.30pm according to Aberystwyth. It will be the first time since August 6th 2002 that the clubs have met.

The ground is situated at Park Avenue on the south side of the town. It's a nice club to visit with parking close by.

How to get there (from Abertownfans.com):

If arriving by car from the A44 this is easy. Follow the signs to Aberystwyth, go straight across the roundabout, and the ground is on your left, just has you go past Kwik Save you can duck into the Car Park. If you are coming in from the
North, follow the road down the hill into town; follow the one-way system round to the left, and keep in the left lane. Take the 1st exit at the roundabout, and the entrance to the ground is 400yds or so up on the right hand side.

The Pubs close to the ground: (also from Abertownfans.com - Note prices may have
risen since this guide was written - ed)

While there are plenty of pubs in Aberystwyth, and the fact it is only a small town, you want to be able to drink near the ground, so as to leave as late as possible (7:28pm if you can run!). Their recommendations are as follows:

Yr Hen (Wetherspoons): In the train station, so you can't miss it. Usual stuff for a Wetherspoons, cheap food and beer, but is it really a proper pub?

Lord Beechings : across the road from Wetherspoons, serves Grolsch for £1 a bottle, and has decent music on, or sport on TV.

The Mill Inn : just past the roundabout (on Mill Street) on the right-hand side. A quality pub, quite small, but well priced. Three TV's, which will always have sport on if it is on. A pool table, and a double whiskey and lemonade, or a double vodka and coke for only £1.50.

The Clubhouse - If you want to drink as close to the pitch as possible, then pop into the clubhouse in the ground. Fair priced beer, and the service is pretty good too. Dartboard, and plenty of comfy chairs to sit on.

Those who went in 2002 will remember that it was at that time that Ryan Giggs's
brother had been connected with the Welsh club. The game was a 0-0 draw noticable for the poor performance of the Bulls in front of goal and the continual drum banging by five students from the local university. Amidst the trialists at the game were Steve Guinan, who didn't impress on the evening, Andy Baird and John Grant.

HU-FC.co.uk mentioned the students in a comment after the match:

Being a university town, Aber has student representatives. They were in evidence last night, all five of them, with a big drum singing and shouting. In term time well over a hundred students often attend home games. The five present last night were all from over the border with the leader said to come from Rochdale but it did not stop them having a go at the ref who came from Aber. One particular decision against an Aber player was countered with "the referees from England!".

Aberystwyth have claimed the scalp of Hereford, but it was a long time ago in 1972. They defeated the Bulls in a reply of the fourth round of the Welsh Cup. In those days border clubs such as Hereford and Shrewsbury were invited to take part in this cup.

To have lost to Aberystwyth, close to time Hereford defeated Newcastle United in the FA Cup, may have been forgotten by some Bulls fans!
