2 - 2 Hereford United
A last gasp goal
meant Hereford United collected only a point from their game at
Morecambe.
Ryan Sugden's strike meant United close the gap by a point, as
Chester City lost 2-1 at Forest Green Rovers.
Hereford went into the match without influential midfielder Ben
Smith, missing through suspension, and top scorer Steve Guinan.
Defender Andy Tretton, back in training, was not ready to
participate so Graham Turner had to reshuffle his pack.
Left-footed Chris Palmer made his debut after signing on-loan
from Derby County, while Anwar Uddin kept his place at the centre
of defence after extending his loan spell for another month from
Bristol Rovers.
The game was dominated by Morecambe, but United started brightly.
Mark Beesley fired wide in the fourth minute when one-on-one, and
at the other end, Danny Carlton chipped the crossbar when he was
played through.
Danny Williams could have opened the scoring on fifteen minutes
but his thirty-yard free-kick was tipped over by Craig Mawson in
the Morecambe goal, and from the resulting corner, Mark Beesley
found the net. However, it was rightly ruled out for offside.
Jamie Pitman then picked up a head injury which saw him suffer
with a blood-ridden shirt for the rest of the game, but it wasn't
long before Hereford were ahead. Anwar Uddin knocked the ball
home at the far post after Danny Williams' free-kick from the
right channel.
Carlton responded instantly, with an overhead kick, but that
missed the target. Three minutes later, though, he made no
mistake. Dave Perkins crossed, and Carlton netted to level.
Perkins could have made it 2-1 later, but he fired over before
half time.
The Shrimps dominated the second half, but it is a credit to
Hereford that they were kept at bay. Jim Bentley headed onto the
crossbar, and Garry Thompson's ball across goal failed to find a
touch. The game was made much worse for Hereford after Michael
Rose was dismissed for a second yellow card.
However, an inspired substitution gave Hereford the lead again
with twelve minutes left. Richard Teesdale came on and netted
with his first touch, slotting home Chris Palmer's corner. Then
it was a matter of all hands on deck, keeping Morecambe out. They
did well, as Baker saved twice from Ryan Sugden, one with his
legs, and also stopped a long-range Nick Rogan effort.
Then, three minutes into injury time, the equaliser came. Ryan
Sugden's first shot bounced off the crossbar, and his second
found it too. However, it dropped down over the line, and
Morecambe grabbed a point.
