Hereford United 1 - 1
Wolverhampton Wanderers
In
sweltering conditions, Hereford United deservedly drew
with Wolves at Edgar Street in their first pre-season
friendly.
Wolves split their squad into two for the evening, with the other half winning 1-0 at Bristol Rovers, but Edgar Street still saw seven first-team regulars with a combined cost of £4 million. In their 'old gold' and sporting Premiership badges on their shirts, Wolves' performance didn't match their status as United started the brighter, despite missing Jordan King, Ben Smith and Steve Guinan.
With less than ninety seconds on the clock, a good move concluded with Jamie Pitman's shot being tipped over by Wolves' first-choice 'keeper Matt Murray, who was then drawn away from his goal on fifteen minutes by Rob Purdie. The ex-Leicester player was named in attack by Hereford manager Graham Turner, and he was released by David Brown in the centre circle before making a cracking run forward and sliding a low ball into the net with Murray stranded.
At the other end, Jimmi Lee Jones had an effort that sailed across Matt Baker's goal, but United continues to have the better efforts. Paul Parry headed over from six yards out, but Wolves should have levelled midway through the opening period with Paul Butler headed a corner onto the United post before the ball was cleared.
Danny Williams also forced Murray into a save after a free-kick from the impressive Michael Rose in the right channel was laid off to the ex-Chesterfield man, but Hereford were worth their lead at the break.
The crowd of 1,895 was pretty decent for a pre-season friendly, exceeding nine Conference attendances at Edgar Street last term. However, it was the 234 Wolves fans who were celebrating after fifty seven minutes, when Adam Proudlock latched onto a ball from the Wolves right to fire home from fifteen yards.
Frequent substitutions confused matters in the second period, but Hereford held their own and with twenty minutes left, a Rose drive from outside the box troubled Murray, with late chances from Pitman and a Parry cross that wasn't converted could have sealed a late victory.
Nevertheless, it was a decent performance from the Bulls who will be pleased with a solid start to the pre-season campaign.
