Ludlow Town 1 - 13 Hereford United
The crowd
at Ludlow Town's new Coors Stadium was treated to a
goal-fest as Hereford United won 13-1, their highest win
in a friendly match since beating Gibralter 15-0 in 1974.
Five of the goals came from Danny Bertram, who scored four times in the opening eleven minutes as Hereford fielded triallists Dean Craven, Danny Moon and Nathan Edwards, a right-back from Swindon Town.

It didn't
take long for United to open the scoring, as Bertram
struck from an acute angle after two minutes and four
minutes later a Paul Parry ball found Bertram, who
doubled the advantage.
A move from the right channel on eight minutes saw Bertram make it three, and the ex-West Bromwich Albion youngster struck from the edge of the box to net the fourth three minutes later. Ludlow appeared a little overwhelmed with United's start. However, first-half captain Jamie Pitman was clearly angered by the Shropshire club's reply, which saw them seal a goal as Darryl Smith capitalised on a lapse in the United defence as he put Shaun Humphreys through, who beat Matt Baker from close range.
Pitman, though, got his revenge on seventeen when a Ludlow defender made a mistake and the through-ball found him a couple of yards out to make it 5-1, and Jordan King's long ball ten minutes before half-time found Bertram, who struck from outside the box to push Hereford's tally to six.
Danny Williams and Michael Rose entered the arena at the break, and the removal of Jamie Pitman made Paul Parry the Hereford skipper. It was his contribution on fifty-four minutes, when he cut a ball back, which set-up Rose to score United's seventh. Williams was then in the right place eleven minutes later as Parry again worked well on the right to leave him with a simple tap-in to net the eighth, and Williams turned provider for the next goal on seventy minutes, as Dean Craven turned the ball home.
It was evident that Hereford wanted to push their tally into double figures, and did so with a move that started with Parry, incorporated substitute Steve Guinan, and saw a Williams shot pushed away but Ludlow's replacement goalkeeper Martin Poole, only for the follow-up to be struck home by Jordan King.
Hereford's eleventh was a scorching effort from Dean Craven, while Danny Williams split the defence with seven minutes to go to strike goal number twelve. On eighty-seven, a Parry cross from the right was turned past his own goalkeeper by Darren Leonard to complete a difficult performance for Ludlow, who did not disgrace themselves despite the scoreline.
From United's point of view, the triallists cannot be discredited. Bertram proved what he was capable of in attack, albeit against lower-graded opposition, while Dean Craven had a good game and is definitely worth another look. In defence, both Danny Moon and Nathan Edwards proved that they would be useful acquisitions alongside Andy Tretton, Tony James or the newly shaven-headed Richard Teesdale.
