Disappointment all round
Hereford United defender Matt Clarke was disappointed with today's 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Wigan Athletic.
"We put everything into the game and had the better chances," he said. "I think the goal was the only chance they had. But we came out of the game with a lot of credit. They are the best team in the second division but we have done well against them."
Mick Galloway backed up Clarke's comments, and also mentioned that the sticking point in his transfer to Hereford was with his old club Carlisle United. The Cumbrians are yet to agree certain matters with the player, but the midfielder has completed talks at Edgar Street.
After the game, Latics boss Paul Jewell was full of praise for the Bulls.
"Hereford will feel aggrieved they have not won," he told football.nationwide.co.uk. "They were a credit to the Conference.
"But we have kept a clean sheet and won the game and to win a game 1-0 away from home you have to be pleased."
This is how the official Wigan Athletic website reported the game:
"A tired looking Latics looked as though they were heading for a replay with Conference club Hereford United, who were unlucky not to score twice themselves. However, Scott Green scored with just two minutes of time remaining to take Jewell's men into the Second Round. It was cruel for the Conference side, who were generally the better side on the day, and can count themselves unlucky not to have made another FA scalp."
Meanwhile, United drop to ninth in the Conference after Barnet's 4-0 win over Leigh RMI sees them jump into eighth on goal difference.
