United given hardest tie
Hereford United couldn't face a tougher task in the FA Cup first round as they will play the highest-placed team in the competition.
As Premiership and Division One sides don't enter until the third round stage, Wigan Athletic, top of Division Two, will provide the toughest test for United.
Managed by Paul Jewell, the Latics will make the trip to Edgar Street on Saturday 16th November at 3pm, unless the match is moved for television coverage or on police advice.
The last time the two teams met was in 1996/97 when they met contrasting fortunes. Hereford were relegated from Division Three whilst Wigan were promoted as champions with 84 points. The league matches that season saw Wigan win 4-1 at their old Springfield Park ground (they now play at the JJB Stadium), but in February 1997, United were shock 3-1 victors at Edgar Street.
In the FA Cup, the sides have met once before. The Latics emerged 4-1 winners in the second round of the 1953/54 competition, and the game drew a club record 27,500 spectators to Springfield Park for the game. The game then was an all non-league tie, as Wigan were not elected to the Football League until 1978, some six years after Hereford.
