Bulls stay fifth

Sunday's results in the Conference mean that Hereford United stay in fifth place with 26 points from 14 games. Yeovil are now four points ahead of Chester with Doncaster in third spot. Southport are fourth with one point more than the Bulls.

Other than Hereford and Northwich, all clubs have played 15 games. So after Tuesday's match at Edgar Street, the only mid-week game in the conference, there should be an indication of Hereford's chances of finishing in the top five for a play off place.

Should the Bulls win they will move to joint third with Donny. A draw will leave them in fifth, three points ahead of Morecambe.

Caution will be needed before reading too much into the position as the Bulls good away record has been obtained against clubs further down the league. On the other hand home form has included draws against both Yeovil and Chester.

If home form improves, and that must mean beating sides like Northwich, then there must be some goals scored. Five goals in six starts is not very impressive. The strike rate has to improve.

Graham Turner was quoted after the Burton game as saying: "We must get our home record right if we have any aspirations of being in the top five. We have to make our ground a bit of a fortress starting with Northwich on Tuesday."

After Friday's game there are doubts about Matt Clarke, who had six stiches in a head wound, and Danny Williams with an ankle injury. So Rob Purdie could start in midfield.

Another problem the Bulls face is a number of players with yellow cards. Although in total they have only 21, the lowest except Telford in the league, Pitman has four and Guinan, Williams, and Rose have three. With a small squad Hereford do not want players off with suspensions.

Northwich lost 4-1 at Scarborough this afternoon and having to play again on Tuesday may affect their form, although they have only lost two away games in eight outings.
