Bulls disappointed at unlucky defeat

Hereford United were disappointed with yesterday's 4-3 extra time defeat to Northampton Town in the LDV Vans Trophy.

United's two-goal hero Chukki Eribenne, on loan from Bournemouth, told the Evening News: "There's always going to be physical contact, football is a contact sport, but I thought it was a very rough decision."

Midfielder Mick Galloway, who's late deflection resulted in Northampton's third goal, said of the penalty decision: "The player had clearly over-run the ball and it was in Baker's hands when the referee gave the penalty. It was a shocking decision."

United boss Graham Turner backed-up that assessment. “I thought the penalty was an awful decision," he said. “The ball was almost in the goalkeeper’s hands, the lad had knocked it too far, and I don’t think the central defender did anything other than try and get across and stop, but these things happen in cup ties.”

Northampton's Jamie Forrester opened the scoring after just 24 seconds and, as he told the Chronicle & Echo, he was delighted. “The move for the goal was a lovely move, we put plenty of passes together and it was a great start to the game for us, but all credit to Hereford they came back into it and on another day they may have won.”

Cobblers boss Kevan Broadhurst commented: "It was a cracking cup tie. There was plenty of good forward play from both teams and although at 4-3 it was a bit close, we are through to the next round.

“This was a big game for Hereford and they were a good side, they were a credit to the Conference.”
