LDV Draw On Soccer AM

As usual, the first round draw for the LDV Trophy will take place on Soccer AM (Sky Sports 1) between 9am and Noon on Saturday September 17th. As last season, the Bulls are in the Northern Section of the draw, and there will be two byes drawn first to even up the draw. The full list of participants in the Northern section is

Football League: Barnsley, Blackpool, Boston United, Bradford City, Bury, Carlisle United, Chester City, Chesterfield, Darlington, Doncaster Rovers, Grimsby Town, Hartlepool United, Huddersfield Town, Lincoln City, Macclesfield Town, Mansfield Town, Oldham Athletic, Port Vale, Rochdale, Rotherham United, Scunthorpe United, Stockport County, Tranmere Rovers, Wrexham.

Conference Clubs: Accrington Stanley, Cambridge United, Halifax Town, Hereford United, Kidderminster Harriers, Morecambe.

In other news Walsall winger Daryl Taylor, who spent some time on loan at Edgar Street last season, is expected to sign on loan at Tamworth once he regains full fitness. Taylor, 21, damaged knee ligaments in his fifth appearance for the Bulls against York and hasn't played since April, but is expected to play some part in a Walsall reserve match tonight. Another ex-Bull likely to feature in that match is trialist Michael Husbands who spent some time on loan at Edgar Street from Aston Villa in early 2003, making five substitute appearances. Husbands has been released by Bristol Rovers after failing to break into their first team plans. Meanwhile Leroy Williams, who joined the Bulls on loan with Taylor, has been on trial at Stoke City. In his opening game, against his former employers Walsall, he set up the second goal and was booked for a late challenge in a 3-2 win. He is due to get another outing in a reserve match tonight against Sheffield Utd.

Fourth Official Not To Blame For Green Dismissal

Tamworth's Official Website reports that the Fourth Official for the Tamworth - Hereford match was not involved in the decision making for the double dismissal of Graham Ward and Ryan Green.

Emma Whitehouse, a last-minute replacement for the original and fully qualified, told the referee when consulted that she had been marshalling the technical areas after the initial foul so it was the referee and linesmen that made the decision. It has appeared to the watching crowd that it was the intervention of the Fourth Official that led to the dismissals.

The matter of Miss Whitehouse's suitability to act as an official when closely involved with Tamworth has been raised but, whilst it is unusual to have one so closely linked to one club, it is not uncommon to have a local fourth official. Many of the fourth officials at Edgar Street are Bulls supporters and are regularly seen watching matches there when not officiating at a match.

Confguide to lose it's freedom permanently?

The lack of updates over the last couple of weeks to the Confguide.com website by it's new owners, Teamtalk Media, have disappointed many regular readers of it's once excellent news and results service. The site, which once boasted as-they-happened goal changes, hasn't been updated from Saturday's Conference programme.

Teamtalk Media, the sporting content arm of Ukbetting PLC, operate dozens of sports websites and took over the site in mid-July stating in a news release on the Confguide site "The confguide.com site is now being operated by the Teamtalk media group. We are committed to retaining the site as a leading news forum for fans and supporters of the football conference."

Unfortunately, a series of events since that announcement on 18th July appear to have changed their priorities. Totalbet.com, part of Teamtalk's parent company, is now the official betting and gaming partner of the Conference, and Teamtalk are also now responsible for operating not only the conferencefootball.tv match highlights website, but also the official Conference website, footballconference.co.uk.

Over the past week, every news article to appear on Confguide has appeared, word for word, on the official Conference website - with the Official site updated not only first, but with more articles and information. This reporter fears that the Confguide site, once the bane of John Moules and the Conference Committee, is heading for a slow death followed by a swift merger into the official Conference site.

Hereford win friendly

Below is a report on this afternoon's friendly with Bristol Rovers - taken from their official site - which Hereford won 2-1:

A Bristol Rovers side containing a mix of first team players, youth team players and trialists went down by the odd goal in three at Hereford United this afternoon.

An Andy Ferrell strike and a Jon Bass own goal gave the home side a 2-0 lead, before Jamie Forrester scored a late consolation after also missing a penalty.

Rovers goalkeeper Martin Horsell made two comfortable saves early on, before his side created their first opportunity from a Paul Trollope corner. The Hereford defence failed to get the ball clear from the set-piece, and Lewis Powell's shot was cleared away off the line.

Horsell made a fine save from a close-range header, before Rovers went close again ahead of the interval with Powell shooting over the bar, Forrester seeing a low drive saved by Craig Mawson, and Portuguese trialist Diego blasting over the target from just inside the penalty box.

Rovers went behind just ten minutes into the second half after a good ball into the box from the right found Ferrell unmarked at the back post, and the Hereford midfielder finished well with a curling effort into the top corner past a diving Horsell.

Four minutes later Rovers should have been back on level terms, after being awarded a penalty for a foul on Powell in the box. But Forrester was to be thwarted from 12 yards, at Mawson dived low to his left to push the attempt away to safety.

Almost immediately after the spot-kick Rovers fell further behind, as Bass, facing his own goal, could only touch a long ball forward from Hereford past Horsell and into the back of his own net.

Forrester struck the woodwork with a header as Rovers pressed to get back into the game, and the striker was unfortunate again as Mawson pushed a fine low shot around the post for a corner.

The former Hull City striker wasn't to be denied at the death however, as he collected the ball in the box before turning and shooting past Mawson to half the home side's advantage.

Stevenage: Costs and Directions

As usual, visiting supporters are located in the Buildbase (South) Stand. The Stand is all-seater with ticket prices set at £13 and £10 (OAP, Student, UB40, Under 18's). The Matchday programme costs £2.

Broadhall Way is situated on the A602, situated by the second roundabout off the A1(M) junction signposted Stevenage South. Barring accidents, the quickest route to Stevenage from Hereford is usually to take the M5 at Worcester (J7) North to the M42 (J4A), then follow it to the M6 (J7A, London) and the M1 (Merged motorway, London). At J11, follow the A505 through Luton and follow the signs for Hitchin. In Hitchin, follow the signs for A602 (Stevenage). At the A1(M) roundabout take the 5th exit (A1(M), London) and after three miles rejoin the A602 (Stevenage South). Follow the A602 and you will see the football ground on the right. Parking is in the fairground car park on the left hand side of the A602. There is a petrol station on the next roundabout of the A602. It is not advised to park in any of the superstore car parks around the stadium as clamping is occasionally used.

Preview: Stevenage 100% At Home

The Bulls go into Saturdays clash looking to shatter Stevenage's 100% home record and set their own season on track after a shaky start. The Hertfordshire outfit have so far beaten Halifax, Tamworth, and Altrincham at home this season, but now face a Hereford side that is unbeaten at Broadhall Way for three seasons - winning the last three league encounters there without conceding a goal, and drawing 1-1 in the play-off match last season. Only two players remain from the starting XI's from the last Bulls defeat at Boro - the respective current captains and central defenders Tony James and Jason Goodliffe.

Hereford will benefit from having a free midweek to help heal minor knocks to several players. Both Alex Jeannin and Jon Brady limped out of Saturday's draw with Altrincham and will need time to recover, and neither Tamika Mkandawire nor Guy Ipoua were deemed fit enough after missing the Tamworth game. Jamie Pitman's surprise appearance on the bench on Saturday was encouraging, but it is likely to be too early for him to be considered for a starting berth. Two players definitely missing will be two full backs - the suspended Ryan Green and ex-Stevenage player Simon Travis, but Graham Turner will be pleased by the performance on Saturday of Rob Purdie in the full back role and will likely continue with him in what is an unfamilar position for the midfielder who has struggled to recapture his form of two years ago recently. Turner will probably retain the bulk of the starting XI barring injuries, but may look to recall top scorer Ipoua if fit after Saturdays blank scoreline.

Last Weeks Team: Brown, Purdie, Jeannin, Beckwith, James, Blewitt, Ferrell, Stanley, Brady, Carey-Bertram, Stansfield.

Stevenage, who have won three on the trot, struggled to finish off Halifax in their last match and were lucky to retain all three points. They currently sit third in the Conference, two points ahead of the Bulls. Boro go into the game with two players suspended with both Captain Jason Goodliffe and Dino Maamria serving bans. Ex-Bull Danny Williams has been a used substitute in the last two games, scoring from a free-kick with his first touch against Crawley.

Last Weeks Team: Julian, Warner, Hocking, Henry, Gregory, Nurse, Quinn, Bulman, Boyd, Elding, Stamp.

Aldershot vs Hereford live on conferencefootball.tv

Conferencefootball.tv have announced that the Aldershot - HUFC game at the Recreation Ground will be broadcast live on the internet on 27th September (7.45pm kick off).

The much maligned service has taken advantage in leaps in technology since their stuttering early attempts to broadcast live matches, and appear to have cured many of the glithes and content problems that marred their first forays into live match broadcasting.

Also announced is the live broadcast of the Stevenage - Exeter match on the 20th September. A minimum of 512k broadband is required to use the service.

Sky Sports have also confirmed two more live Conference matches. Stevenage - Dagenham (October 5th, 7.45pm), and Woking - Grays (October 8th, 12.15pm) have been scheduled for broadcast.

O'Kelly Pulls On Boots Again

Former Bulls coach, and firm fans favourite, Richard O'Kelly has re-registered as a player at Bournemouth more than 10 years after hanging up his boots.

Injuries to a string of players have meant that The Cherries reserve side has been down to its barebones recently, and the addition of O'Kelly, who played over 400 senior games as a striker for the likes of Walsall, Port Vale, and Grimsby, will ease the situation.

O'Kelly, who left the Bulls for the Assistant Manager post with the Cherries in 2004, was last registered as a player in 2003 when he was featured as a unused sub in a number of squads. His only appearance in a HUFC shirt was in a HUFC vs Supporters match in the 2003 pre-season.

Bristol Rovers Friendly Today

Bristol Rovers send a team of reserves and fringe first teamers to Edgar Street today for a behind closed doors friendly match. The game is one of a series of friendly matches Graham Turner will arrange over the course of the season, in preference to the poorly arranged reserve league that provided irregular competition last season. The game kicks off at 2pm.

Loan Transfer Window "Reopens Wednesday" / New Conference Loan Rules

Thanks to a deal between FIFA, the Football League, and the Football Conference there is an extended window of opportunity to sign loan players.

The agreement had long been rumoured, but few details were available on it. It has now been confirmed that a "loan window" will open on Wednesday until 24th November to take players for up to three months. A second "loan window" will come in seven days after the January transfer window shuts until the last week of March - the traditional "Deadline Day".

Conference National Clubs are now allowed up to 8 long term (season) loans, of which 4 can be over 23, and four under 23. There are no longer any limits on short term loan players, but only 5 loan players of any type can be included in a matchday squad. All loans in the special loan windows must be ratified by the Conference, and the Club(s) involved must provide "valid reason" for the loan.

First to take advantage of the new window is Burton Albion who expect to sign Lincoln striker, and one time Bulls target, Danny Bacon on a months loan on Wednesday. Bacon, 24, scored the winner as his former club Hucknall beat the Bulls in last season's FA Trophy, but has only featured twice as substitute for his new club this season.

Conference Odds Update

Four of the nine Bookmakers currently offering odds on the Nationwide Conference back Hereford United as joint favourites for the title. Both William Hill and Bluesq.com currently offer best value at 5/1 on the Bulls.

Seven of the nine bookmakers back either Grays (best odds 5/1) or Exeter (9/2) as favourites, with odds as low as 7/2 available on both. Stevenage (13/2) are a clear fourth favourite. York appear to be the value bet at the moment. The fourth placed side are still available at 20/1 generally.

Aldershot, currently bottom of the table and in action tonight on Sky, have slipped to 66/1 with bet365.

For Top Goalscorer, Guy Ipoua heads the Bulls strikers at 10/1. Stansfield is 25/1 and Danny Carey-Bertram is 33/1. Anthony Elding and Charlie McDonald (7/1) lead the list, followed by Lee Phillips (8/1), Ipoua and Lee Boylan (10/1).

Stevenage Chairman Issues Warning

Stevenage Chairman Phil Wallace yesterday issued a "hands-off" warning to Clubs circling some of the more talented players at Broadhall Way.

Wallace told the official Stevenage website "Youngsters Alan Julian, Ronnie Henry and George Boyd are all under 20 and attracting scouts from a host of top clubs whilst Anthony Elding and Jon Nurse, both in their early 20's, are being tracked by several as well. Our players know that their aim must be to play in the Championship at least if they ever leave us. Moving to a League Two side is not a career move in our eyes so any interest from those clubs is simply wasted on us - anyway Graham Westley has made it clear that their job is to win the league with us and that's all we want to think about right now."

Strangely, Wallace's statement is factually inaccurate with neither Alan Julian (22), nor Ronnie Henry (21) under 20. The timing of the statement, four days after the transfer window closed, is also odd - considering that it will be three months before any contracted player is allowed to move anywhere.

Time Clouds Stoker's Memory

In the Non-League Paper's Dream Team section, ex-Bull Gareth Stoker chose the best Eleven players he had ever played with in non-league circles. Despite not playing for the Bulls in non-league, Stoker picks out two ex-HUFC players - Neil Grayson, a former colleague at FGR, and himself - "A hard working midfielder who likes a tackle and is loud on and off the pitch. Pops up with the occasional stunning goal as the 35-yard screamer against Tottenham in front of 40,000 at White Hart Lane in 1997 proved." Whilst not wishing to burst Stoker's bubble, this reporter can only find reference to a 25 yard shot which went in off the back of Ian Walker's head in front of a half empty stadium.

In another HUFC-related news story in the NLP, the "Stevenage Borough Band", made up from pupils from a local school, will make it's debut in next Saturdays encounter.

The NLP also report that the racism claims by Dino Maamria against Ian Selley have now been dropped, apparently due to a lack of evidence. Selley is believed to still be considering legal action.

Heathcote Demands Respect

Whilst some of his touchline antics infuriated many in the Merton Stand, Altrincham manager Graham Heathcote is proud of his team's performances so far this season.
Speaking in the Non League Paper, he stated "When we play the Morecambes of this world and come to places like this, who people say are the best passing sides in the league, with all due respect we know we are part-time and are going to come under the cosh. So we set our stall out to do a job and we have done it - very, very well".
"We have ten points after six games - everybody said we were going to get relegated, but we've come here and got a point so maybe people will give us a bit more respect now. It's a good start, not a great one, but after what everybody was saying, we have to go out and prove them wrong."

Graham Turner was disappointed by the result: "Altrincham were hard to break down, but you've got to take your chances. We didn't have the personnel to change things too much, so we had to keep playing and passing the ball. We needed to take our opportunities when they came along, but did not do that. The longer the game went on like that then the more secure Altrincham became and the deeper they got. We never looked as if we were going to concede but you never know in games like this."

Stansfield Disappointed By Draw

Speaking to BBC Hereford & Worcester's Keith Hall, Adam Stansfield admitted he was disappointed by today's result "It's disappointing to draw and only get one point when we dominated the game so well and had so many chances, quite a few myself. We've not conceded that's one good thing".
"We created six or seven clear chances, but we've got to finish then if we are to go on and get promotion". When asked about the partnership with Bertram, he added "DCB's workrate is second to none, his pace takes some of the workload off me".
Finishing up, he was asked about the Beckwith-Little incident "I didn't see it, but some of the players saw Little swing at him. That's a red card usually".

The full three minute interview is available to listen to via Realplayer on the BBC website.

Goalless draw frustrates Bulls

Hereford United dominated throughout but failed to get a decisive breakthrough against Altrincham this afternoon at Edgar Street. Graham Turner made only one forced change to the side that defeated Tamworth on Bank Holiday Monday; Rob Purdie stepped into the place of the suspended Ryan Green at right wing back. There was a return for Tamika Mkandawire, but only to the subs bench and also making the bench was long term absentee Jamie Pitman.

Hereford started well but it was The Robins who first went close when, after some good build up play, Colin Potts saw his effort from the edge of the box tipped around the post by Wayne Brown. Adam Stansfield had a good chance to break the deadlock with Hereford's first real opening, when his striker partner Danny Carey-Bertram turned well and spotted the run of Stansfield but he was foiled by the on rushing Stuart Coburn when one on one with the 'keeper.

Stansfield again forced Coburn into a good save, this time when he headed Alex Jeannin's corner towards the bottom corner. Coburn failed to gather it the first time but was quick to grab hold of it again before a Hereford player got there. Stansfield finally got the ball in the back of the net but his celebrations were cut short by a raised flag on the far side for offside. After a good move Craig Stanley had slammed a shot low towards the goal and Stansfield was quick to get a foot on it and divert it past Coburn, but was adjudged to be offside.

Tempers rose soon after when Collin Little squared up to Dean Beckwith and seemed to push Beckwith in the chest right in front of the dugouts. The referee missed the incident but was informed of events by the fourth official. Beckwith was booked first and the yellow card followed for Little, much to the annoyance of Bulls coach John Trewick, who seemed to think, along with many others, that Little should have been sent off.

It was not long before the referee made another important decision which once again meant that Altrincham kept eleven players on the pitch. Stansfield got the better of Gary Talbot when battling for a long ball over the top and Stansfield got ahead of the defender, only to be pulled to the ground just outside of the box. Talbot was the last defender and still the referee failed to produce a red card. Jon Brady struck the resulting free kick but it was tipped over by Coburn.

Purdie, who played very well as stand in wing back, crossed to man of the match Stansfield before half time but the header was saved. However, before the break a Bulls counter attack saw Brady just miss a cross from the right before Jeannin cracked the ball back into the middle, where Stansfield didn't fully connect when a yard out.

Hereford started the second period with more possesion but again unable to find an opening. Stansfield cut back to Stanley, but his tame effort was blocked before Jeannin fed the ball down the flank for Stansfield, but Carey-Bertram was just inches away from connecting with the pass accross the goal face. Carey-Bertram managed to get a shot away from the next cross, courtesy of Purdie, but his deflected effort rebounded off the cross bar.

Brady was replaced with twenty minutes to go because of a hamstring injury, and so Graham Evans made his first home appearance. Stanley was at the start and finish of another Hereford move, but after Purdie had found Ferrell and he'd layed the ball out to Stanley, the low drive flashed wide. Stacey Coldicott replaced the injured Alex Jeannin with fifteen minutes left and Ferrell moved to left wing back. Stansfield created one last good chance out of nothing for United when he tackled a defender on the left, cut into the box but was denied at the near post by Coburn.

All in all, United will be frustrated with the result as they really should have won this game. In truth, Altrincham rarely troubled the home side but did look to be a decent outfit. If they continue to perform like that they should have no problems in staying in this division although they may need a little more firepower in attack. There were many good performances from Hereford players in what was probably their second best performance of the season. It was just unfortunate that they couldn't find that killer touch that was needed so badly.

HUFC: Brown, James, Blewitt, Beckwith, Jeannin, Purdie, Ferrell, Stanley, Brady, Carey-Bertram, Stansfield. Subs: Mkandawire, Mawson, Evans, Coldicott, Pitman

AFC: Coburn, Rose, Band, Talbot, Adams, Potts, Owen, Hawes, Olsen, Williams, Little. Subs: Acton, Maddox, Chalmers, Melling, Hendley.

Maamria Suspended For 3 Matches

Dino Maamria, the Stevenage striker, will miss next Saturday's clash against Hereford at Broadhall Way after being given a three match suspension for spitting at an opponent.

Maamria was initially sent off in the match against Woking for a late tackle on August 16, but was later reported for spitting at another player after his dismissal. He has just completed the initial three match ban for the dismissal but will now serve an additional ban for the second offence, and has been given a £500 fine.

The game was a bad tempered affair, and Maamria made allegations of racial abuse against Woking midfielder Ian Selley after the game. The FA are yet to look into these matters, but both Selley and Woking have denied the allegations.

HUFC 0 Altrincham 0

The Bulls drew 0-0 today in the lunchtime clash with Altrincham, despite hitting the bar and having one disallowed for offside.

Full match report to follow.

Turner Demands Consistency

Speaking to Chris Ammonds of the Official HUFC website today, Graham Turner said "Consistency is something that we must find as soon as we possibly can, because we cannot afford to fall too far behind the pacesetters at this stage for fear of then leaving ourselves too much to do later in the season".

Turner also spoke about the last two performances, and looked forward to tomorrows match: "As I said before, it's vital that we use Edgar Street to our advantage because it really should be a huge plus point for us. Our fans love to get behind us if we give them something to shout about and therefore the way we go about things early on is vital. We cannot afford another debacle like the Grays one and the players know that as much as I do. Hopefully we will not see that type of thing again this campaign because losing in that way is simply unacceptable if we have any hopes of success this season".

The full article is available on the Official HUFC Website http://www.herefordunited.co.uk

Stansfield Confident Goals Will Come

Talking in todays Non League Paper, Adam Stansfield stated that he was confident of opening his account for the season against Altrincham tomorrow.

Stansfield, who turns 27 next Saturday, told the NLP "As long as we keep winning games then my goals will come. I had a couple chances against Tamworth and I'm feeling confident heading into the Altrincham match. "It's always tough to play the promoted sides early on in the season," he added.

Stansfield is currently 25/1 with bet365 to be Conference top scorer, and 5/2 to open the scoring tomorrow.

Loan Signings Allowed After Transfer Deadline

It now appears that the Conference has successfully negotiated some leeway with FIFA over the newly imposed Transfer Window.

The BBC website quotes Liam Daish, Gravesend manager, as still looking for a loan striker after the window closed - apparently confirming that a deal had been done. Signs of a deal being sought with FIFA appeared as early as June when, at the Conference AGM, Chairman were asked to keep quiet on the situation until a deal had been struck. However, there has been no official announcement on the situation from either the Conference or the Football League, who were also seeking a compromise on the situation.

In other Conference news, Stevenage have signed Australian striker Keiron Deane, 19, who spent some time non-contract with Chester without breaking into the senior side. Also, conferencefootball.tv is showing another live game tonight with Kidderminster vs Canvey (7.45pm).

Inglethorpe fires back at Turner's comments

In the Conference equivalent of Grumpy Old Men, Alex Inglethorpe has fired another shot at Graham Turner in the Non League Paper after Turner's scathing comments about Exeter's style of play this season.

Inglethorpe was quoted as saying "I appreciate he is an expert on the Conference - he's been there eight years hasn't he?...I'm surprised we're getting mind games in the Conference now. Perhaps Mr Turner is punching below his weight and should be applying for jobs in the Championship or Premiership."

The comments are unlikely to irk Turner since he claims to no longer read the paper he dubbed "The Comic" at the recent Fans Forum, and he has been highly critical of some of their less than accurate reporting.

Team News: Bulls vs Altrincham

Hereford will be without Ryan Green (suspended) and Simon Travis going into the weekend. Doubts remain over the fitness of Tamika Mkandawire (Knee) and Guy Ipoua (Hamstring). Jamie Pitman is unlikely to be in contention for the first time until next week after making a seasonal debut in the reserves last week. Graham Turner may well stick with the majority of the side that made a winning return at Tamworth after a dismal performance against Grays, with either Rob Purdie or Mkandawire likely to replace Green in the starting lineup.

Last Weeks Team: Brown, Green, Jeannin, Beckwith, James, Blewitt, Ferrell, Stanley, Brady, Carey-Bertram, Stansfield.

Altrincham have nine players unavailable ahead of Saturday's clash so are likely to travel with only seventeen fit players, though Gary Talbot may face a late fitness test to bolster the squad. Manager Graham Heathcote may have little choice in his starting line up, but appears to have no new injuries worries from the team that beat Morecambe on Monday.

Last Weeks Team: Stuart Coburn, Stephen Rose, George Melling, Peter Band, Chris Adams, Colin Potts, Val Owen, Steve Hawes, James Olsen, Nehru McKenzie, Colin Little.

Dibble set for Conference bow at 40

Much travelled Goalkeeper Andy Dibble received international clearance for his Player-Coach move to Accrington yesterday, and could make his debut for his eighteenth club against Woking on Saturday.

Dibble, capped at every level by Wales and with over 450 senior appearances to his name, has already played in every one of the top four divisions and the Unibond League in England, and the top flights in Wales and Scotland. It was in the League of Wales that Dibble received a bizarre career-threatening injury when, playing for Barry at Camarthen Town in 1998, he made a save and landed on the hydrated lime pitch markings causing extensive burns to his chest. This left him with permanent scars, but nine months later he was again plying his trade in the Football League with Hartlepool.

Football Ground Challenge 2005 Auction Confirmed

The charity auction in aid of St Michaels Hospice has now been confirmed for Saturday 17th September (day of the Morecambe home match) at the Liquid Lounge (formerly The Pegasus Club) from 7.30pm.

72 lots have now been confirmed for the auction, mainly collected during the 2,873 mile tour of all 92 Football League grounds. These include a signed Chelsea shirt, Anfield stadium tour, Ryan Giggs signed photo, signed Spurs ball, signed ball and programme from HUFC giantkillers, signed Wales ball, BBC H&W matchday with the match reporter, and a signed HUFC ball.

The Challenge is less than £1300 short of their £5000 target for the Hospice. More information can be found on the Challenge website http://www.justgiving.com/92footychallenge

Preview: Altrincham will provide stiff test

Altrincham came up to the Conference through the play-offs after finishing fifth in the Conference North last season and were listed as relegation favourites by most bookmakers and pundits, but the Lancashire club come to Edgar Street on the back of three straight wins including an impressive 2-0 victory at home to Morecambe.

Rumoured to be operating on the smallest budget in the Conference, Altrincham have assembled a 26 man squad with considerable Conference experience for their first campaign at this level for five years.

Manager Graham Heathcote has spent most of the last 33 years at Altrincham as player, coach, and manager, notably taking part in several FA Cup Giantkillings of the 70's and 80's, and winning the Unibond league in 1999 as coach as well as last season's unlikely play off success.

With star summer signing ex-Accrington striker Lutel James injured, Colin Little has led the line with two goals so far this season. The former Crewe man, with over 200 Football League appearances under his belt, struck 38 goals last season in 56 appearances. One player likely to be missing from Saturday's line up will be striker Rod Thornley. Injury has limited his first team opportunities this season, but the striker is likely to be pursuing his other career as England team masseur this weekend.

Early match odds (bet365): Hereford 1/2, Draw 5/2, Altrincham 5/1

Hereford Times report confirms injuries

Today's Hereford Times confirms that both Tamika Mkandawire (Knee Ligament) and Guy Ipoua (Hamstring) are struggling with injuries ahead of Saturdays match with Altrincham.

The report also notes that Graham Turner was attempting to sign a loan full back to cover for Ryan Green's suspension, with Simon Travis still at least three weeks from full fitness.

In his column Turner gave praise to the Bulls following at Tamworth, describing the support as "incredible".

Two-time Conference Winner returns on deadline day

In one of the more surprising transfers of the day, Daryl Clare returned to Conference football for the third time signing for Crawley Town for an undisclosed sum - reported by the Crawley Town official website as a club record.

Clare, 27, has won the Conference with Boston and Chester, scoring 73 goals in just over 100 Conference appearances across three seasons. He rejoined Boston from Chester at the start of last season but failed to make an impact on League Two, scoring just three goals last season and only featuring once as a sub this season.

Crawley Town were taken over by the S.A. Group in July and have made swift moves to change to full-time status. The signing of Clare is an ominous sign of the financial strength now at the Club's disposal, and he will make his debut in Monday's game against Aldershot, live on Sky

Gravesend Get Stadium Grant

Gravesend and Northfleet announced yesterday that they had received a grant, estimated at £35,000, from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund to help fund safety work on the Northfleet End of their Stonebridge Road stadium. The Northfleet End, a home terrace, was closed in mid-February due to severe safety concerns and it's reopening will increase capacity by 800.

No new signings for Bulls

With the transfer deadline passed Graham Turner has not made any new signings to bolster his squad, despite the recent indifferent performances of the team. Clubs are still able to sign players not contracted to any other Club. With several players only on short term contracts and many British players plying their trade in the Scandinavian leagues which are due to finish soon, there are likely to be several players available before the opening of the January transfer window.
