Ups And Downs

The excellent unofficial Altrincham site has posted an article about which clubs might be going up or down at the end of the season.

Here's what they said:

Putting aside Altrincham's quest for the play-off places in the Vanarama National League, as we approach the end of the 2024-25 season, let us have a look at the lower leagues and what is happening there.

Next season, of course, two teams each will be promoted to join the Vanarama National League from the North and South divisions.

  • Vanarama National League North: With three fixtures remaining, Scunthorpe United lead the way but they are only a single point ahead of Kidderminster Harriers. Third place is filled by Brackley Town who have the same points as Kiddy and are heading for their seventh successive play-off finish at that level, having lost the previous six! Those two clubs are five points clear of fourth-placed Chester FC.

The other play-off positions are currently occupied by Chorley, Hereford FC and King's Lynn Town.

  • Vanarama National League South: In the South it is Cornwall's Truro City who are top but only on goal difference from West Sussex club Worthing, neither of these clubs ever having been in the national division.

Third place is currently held by East Sussex's Eastbourne Borough, followed by Torquay United, Dorking Wanderers, Boreham Wood and Maidstone United.

  • Northern Premier League: In the northern feeder leagues, Macclesfield FC have already won the Premier Division, as they are 26 points clear of second-placed Worksop Town, with the other three play-off places currently held by Stockton Town, Guiseley, Ashton United and Ilkeston Town.

The NPL's three regional feeder league currently feature three teams who have not played at Step 3 before. They are Leicestershire's Quorn (Midlands division), Widnes (West) and Cleethorpes Town who are already champions in the East division.

In terms of relegation:

  • Vanarama National League: The bottom four are now five points or more adrift of safety with four fixtures to be played.

Twenty-first are Dagenham & Redbridge who are, nevertheless, mid-table in the form guide but have been overtaken by the resurgence of clubs below them such as Braintree Town, Boston United, Woking and Wealdstone. The six-game form guide currently has all four of those clubs in the top nine, whilst the other end of the form guide has three of the current top eight in the division (Gateshead, Altrincham and FC Halifax Town) in the bottom five!

The bottom three in the National League comprise Maidenhead United, AFC Fylde and already relegated Ebbsfleet United.

  • Vanarama National League North: Here, with three games to play, the bottom four are at least eight points adrift, with only 21st placed Needham Market having a mathematical chance of survival. Already relegated are Rushall Olympic, Warrington Town and Farsley Celtic.

  • Vanarama National League South: Two teams have already been relegated, Weymouth and bottom team, Aveley. The other two in the relegation spots are St Albans City and Welling United.

  • Northern Premier League: To date, three clubs Blyth Spartans, Mickleover and Basford United have been relegated with Matlock Town the most in danger of following them downwards.
