Former Hereford player Dean Smith has been appointed manager of Leicester.
A centre-back Smith joined Hereford United from Walsall in 1994 and stayed for three seasons until a move to Leyton Orient.
Hereford paid a fee of £75,000 for Smith which remains a club record.
Here are a couple of his goals against Scarborough in 1995
'It was in the summer of
1994 that Dean Smith moved to Edgar Street from Walsall. He stayed for
three seasons making some 117 league appearances for the club and
scoring some 19 league goals.
Smith was described as a 'vastly
experienced defender who was good in the air'. He was given the captains
armband by then manager Greg Downs.'
In an interview with the Express and Star in 2015 Smith remembered the deal.
“The chairman still references it to this day,"he said.
"He always tells
me, ‘selling you helped save the club!’ I think I am still Hereford’s
record ever transfer fee.
“I remember the conversation, (manager) Kenny Hibbitt phoned me up and told me there is a chance to go but I told him no, I don’t want to leave.
“I was happy at Walsall, I was captain of the club, living at home. Then I went to speak to Hereford and they offered me an unbelievable deal.
“But I was still umming and ahing before I sat down with Jeff and Barry Blower and it was almost a case of, if you don’t go, the club could go bust.”
