Nine-man Hereford progress to FA Trophy 5th Round

Hereford are through to the fifth round of the FA Trophy despite having two players sent off against Stamford.

Ben Pollock and Luke Haines both saw red for the Bulls; however soon after the latter departed the pitch, the Bulls wrapped up the game through Tom Owen-Evans, his second goal of the game.

Hereford were without a recognised striker, with leading marksman Lenell John-Lewis missing the match. Giles Coke - who is believed to be training with Grimsby - was also not involved and was replaced by Pollock, while Callum Rowe, who has joined the club on a season long loan from Aston Villa made his debut at left back.

The Bulls already had a couple of early chances before taking the lead in the 11th minute. A quick break led to Owen-Evans receiving the ball and neatly firing the ball home.

In the 22nd minute, Hereford keeper Brandon Hall had to make a fine save to deny Connor Bartle. Comsos Matwasa then shot over, while at the other end, Owen-Evans had an effort saved. The just before half time Conrad Logan had to tip Chris Camwell's shot over the bar. Six minutes into the second half, Harry Vince fouled Pollock. The Bulls midfielder was not happy with the challenge and barged into Vince, which led to him being sent off.

Bartle shot just over for Stamford in the 67th minute before Logan made a double save to deny James McQuilkin and Owen-Evans.

Hereford were then reduced to nine men 15 minutes from time. Haines was already on a yellow card when he picked up his second booking for dissent. That would have given Stamford a massive lift, but they had no time to reflect on it when Hereford immediately went 2-0 up. A long kick by Hall was not defended well, leading to Owen-Evans to race clear and calmly slot the ball home.

That goal knocked the stuffing out of the home side and they looked far less of a threat as they did earlier in the game. Hereford controlled the final stages of the match and comfortably progressed to the last 16 of the competition.

Hereford: Hall, Hodgkiss, Haines, Pollock, Grimes, Camwell (Klukowski 56), Owen-Evans, Finn (Dy Jones 86), McQuilkin, Lloyd, Rowe. Subs not used: White, Nabi, Whittingham.
