Hereford claim fine away win

Lenell John-Lewis' first half penalty was enough as Hereford beat Guiseley 1-0 this afternoon and claim their first win in National League North.

John-Lewis - who was surprisingly named in the starting line-up after manager Josh Gowling initially said he would be missing due to injury - calmly stroked the spot kick home in the 31st minute after Tom Owen-Evans was adjudged to have been fouled in the area.

Hereford - who had arrived at the game late, causing the match to start at 3.15pm - had to battle hard throughout the game and withstand a lot of Guiseley pressure. Gowling's side have yet to concede so far in the league having picked up four points from their two games.

Guiseley started well and had already gone close with a Lebrun Mbeka a header when Jonathan Wafula shot over when well placed.

John-Lewis had Hereford's best chance of the half when he headed straight at Guiseley keeper Brad Wade in the 27th minute before he did open the scoring from the penalty spot just four minutes later.

Mbeka went close to equalising for Guiseley shortly afterwards before Jared Hodgkiss deflected a shot behind for a corner.

Guiseley continued to press after the break and went close to levelling on the hour mark when, first Felix Kaine Felix saw his effort blocked before Prine Ekpolo shot narrowly wide.

With 13 minutes to go, Hereford cleared the ball off the line after goalkeeper Paul White failed to deal with a punch, while the Bulls were relieved to see Nathan Newell's cross evade a teammate with four minutes remaining.

However, Hereford could have sealed the match at the death when Kyle Finn tried his luck with a fierce drive, but his effort was tipped over by Wade.

In the end, one goal was enough and Gowling will be pleased with the resilence shown by his side considering the Bulls arrived at the game late and went into it on the back of a disappointing FA Cup defeat to Stafford.

Next up is a home match with York, the Bulls' first at Edgar Street this season.

Hereford: White, Hodgkiss, Haines, Wright, Grimes, A Jones, Owen-Evans, Finn (Digie 90+5), John-Lewis (Mooney 80), Lloyd (Klukowski 83), D Jones.
  • Subs not used: Camwell, McQuilkin.
