Tim Harris has issued a stark warning to Hereford's players after the 3-0 defeat to Chester on Tuesday evening.
With Marc Richards coming in as Head Coach earlier in the day, one of four very good candidates, Tim Harris says a restructure is needed and players need to fight for the places as the squad will be whittled down.
"We interviewed four very good candidates, all of which could've done the job," Harris told BBC H&W's Keith Hall.
"Marc is a very intelligent young man, I think he's going to have a great future in the game. He's not only intelligent but he's an excellent coach, he can develop players and we need to put a structure into our game which I can't really see in the two or three games I've seen.
"We've got to restructure and I thought Gareth did a really good job down at Truro the other night. He cajoled the players, put them in positions and got back into the game, in all honesty at 3-0 down we should've been out of sight.
"That's what we need to do, we need to work hard on that training ground. We need to increase their fitness levels and generally put a game plan in place to make us more organised and difficult to beat.
"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out we need somebody up front that can actually hurt people."
Harris was asked about changes to the squad and whether it would be a case of one in, one out.
He added: "Not necessarily. We've got a big squad of players, I think including the young lads we've got something like 25, that's an awful lot at this level.
"We need to whittle that squad down a little bit and I've said to the boys today you need to fight for your places. It's a new regime and what's gone on has gone on, at this level of football if you're not ruthless you'll be punished.
"That's exactly what's happened these past two games."
Harris said that it will take time to turn things around but he is prepared to bring new faces in who he says can deal with the National League North.
"First thing we've got to rally the troops, pick their heads up off the floor because they're not bad lads.
"They've got to learn and they've got to learn very quickly and they're learning the hard way. It is going to take time, and I know people don't want to hear that.
"But if they're not prepared to do it then we've got to get people in who can deal with this level of football because you've got to be on your metal for 90 minutes.
"Without going on, you can't keep conceding goals the way we're conceding goals because you're not going to win football matches."
