Former Hereford United goalkeeper Rhys Evans is running the Bournemouth half marathon in October as in trying to raise £500 in aid of the Alzheimer's Society.
To help his fundraising efforts, the Hereford FC goalkeeping coach is auctioning two shirts from when Hereford reached the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 2016. You can bid on the shirts by contacting Evans on Twitter.
I have two shirts (auctioned separately) from game at Wembley which I’m happy to post directly to anyone prepared to make a silent auction bid for preferred to me via a DM. I am running for an Alzheimer’s and Dementia Charity and I’d appreciate any support. Thank you in advance pic.twitter.com/oGRRlK1zcK— Rhys Evans (@Evans2Rhys) September 16, 2018
Evans says that after seeing the suffering caused by Alzheimers, him and his work colleagues he's running with chose it as their charity.
"Alzheimer’s Charity was chosen by committee with the colleagues from work I am running with," Evans said.
"I am soon to marry into a family who are currently dealing with dementia, an awful thing. Horrendous for the individual suffering but just as difficult for the family to watch the deterioration."
Evans admitted that he's not a natural runner so the 13.1 mile route might be challenging, but it's not the first half marathon he's done.
"Training has been tough, although tonight I have run a PB over 10km so there is improvement! I’ve never been a natural runner perhaps why I became a goalkeeper,
"I’ve done the Swindon Half Marathon before, not long after I retired in 2014. Took me 2 weeks to recover. My aim is to beat my 4 other colleagues running in and around one hour 45 minutes.
"If anyone would be kind enough to sponsor me I’d be extremely grateful. The plan is to up the training run distances in the coming weeks so it'll only get more painful from here on in."
