Former Wales manager John Toshack, who is set to be honoured by the PFA next Thursday for being in the dug-out over 1000 times in his career, has revealed where he first watched Ashley Williams who later captained Wales.
Williams was playing for Stockport County at the time and Toshack's assistant Brian Flynn had suggested he looked at the defender.
So Tosh decided to go to Edgar Street for a 12noon kick off between Hereford and Stockport in League Two. It was Sunday March 1st 2008.
“I remember watching him at Hereford, still playing for Stockport in League Two.
"It was a noon kick-off and I’d quickly seen enough to convince me about Ash.
“I can remember thinking the pace of the game wasn’t the greatest, but that he could still be a useful option for us and would be worth a closer look.
“And he’s come in and never let us down."
