Gavin Williams Returns To Hereford On Saturday

Gavin Williams - BN Pic
With Merthyr managed by former Hereford United midfielder Gavin Williams coming to Edgar Street on Saturday, BN looks back at his career.

Williams will be remembered by Hereford United supporters for the service he gave to the club. He started his career at Edgar Street and made his first appearance when just 17 for the club as a substitute in an FA Cup tie against Sittingbourne.

In five years with the club he made 168 appearances and scored 30 goals. Perhaps his best remembered goal is one he scored at the County Ground at Swindon in an FA Cup tie in 2001.

The following season he moved to Yeovil for a fee of £22,500 plus a 25% sell on clause which proved very lucrative when in December 2004 he was sold to West Ham for £250,000. Hereford later received £62,500.

After West Ham, Williams spent time at the two Bristol clubs, firstly City and then Rovers, before returning to Yeovil in June 2011 where he spent a further two seasons. A short spell at Woking followed.

However in December 2013 he signed for Merthyr and when former manager Steve Jenkins moved to Hereford last May, Williams was appointed manager.
