Ricky George Blasts FA Over Cup Plans

This from The Sun:

RONNIE RADFORD’S goal of the century would NOT have happened without FA Cup replays.
And Hereford’s match-winner Ricky George has slammed the FA’s plans to decimate the world’s oldest cup competition.

George, who famously scored non-league Hereford’s third-round winner over Newcastle in 1972, hit out at plans to scrap replays in a bid to ease fixture congestion.
He told SunSport: “The idea of scrapping replays is absolutely ridiculous.
“It’s appalling and another nail in the coffin of the world’s greatest competition.
“My goal, Ronnie’s goal, wouldn’t have happened without replays
"Speak to anyone in Hereford and beating Newcastle was the greatest day of their lives. They will never forget it.”

Hereford’s remarkable ten-game cup run that season included FIVE replays.
The only tie the minnows did not need a second game for came against Cheltenham way back in the fourth qualifying round.
George added: “Before Newcastle in round three, we played King’s Lynn and almost went out.
“Then we faced Northampton in three games and eventually won in extra-time at The Hawthorns.
“The excitement was unbelievable.
“Then we got a 0-0 draw at Newcastle in the next round.
“Could you imagine had we not been given the chance to given a replay? After beating Newcastle, we played West Ham in the next round and drew 0-0 at home.
“For the replay, Hereford was like a ghost town.
“There were 42,000 at Upton Park, 10,000 from Hereford and there were thousands locked outside — it was bedlam.”

Legendary BBC commentator John Motson made his name covering that famous triumph over the Toon Army at Edgar Street.
He was only 26 at the time and his excitable commentary of Radford’s 35-yard screamer helped launch his career as one of football’s most familiar voices.
And Motson wants the FA to ensure smaller clubs’ hopes of producing a famous giant-killing are protected in the competition.

Motson said: “They should definitely keep replays in the third round.
“The likes of Exeter, Eastleigh and Burton have all got a second chance in recent seasons and the opportunity to get much-needed money.
“And who could forget Hereford? That’s still dear to my heart.
“I understand the logic of getting rid of them from the fourth round onwards as replays then cause fixture congestion.
“That’s why the final and semi-final replays went a while back. But I would not take away third-round replays.”
