Council Leader Explains Why Action Was Taken Against Club

Earlier this evening the Tony Johnson, Leader of Herefordshire Council, was interviewed on BBC H&W about the events at Edgar Street over the past day or so.

"It started about five or six weeks ago after we had had conversations with the owners who said they were going to pay their rent to us and we asked them to confirm their committment in writing.

"We got no such written committment and heard nothing from them.

"Eventually we joined in with a number of other people, HMRC etc, in a winding up petition in the High Court in London to get back the money that was owed to us.

"That was on October 20th and the legal advice to us was that the outcome was likely to be that either the owners would pay all the creditors or the club would be wound up.

"In the event the court gave the club another six weeks. But during that hearing it came to our attention that a number of creditors who we had been advised had been paid in fact turned out not to have been paid.

"That gave us cause for thought so we got together and said we've had enough and we're going to push for our money we are owed.

"I don't think the money would have been paid today if we hadn't of pushed them.

"As far I am aware, the debts owed have been settled this afternoon.

"We went for a peaceable entry last night or repossession of the leases last night and that meant that is had to be completely agreeable. If there is anyone in the ground they could ask us to go away then we must and that's what happened.

"So having done that we said right we'll go to plan B and we'll go to the court to forfeit the leases on the grounds of non-payment of rent. We served that this afternoon and the rent got promptly paid.

"We are still looking at the various legal options open to us but I'm not a lawyer so I'm not qualified to comment on that.

"Our principle interest is that the ground continues to play succesful football and that any development from the ends is used for the benefit of the club which is what the contract says."
