Keyte Must Decide Whether To Back HUST's Plan

Whatever the result this afternoon one thing is certain, currently Hereford United can not pay its debts and faces an uncertain future.

There's little point in repeating how and why the club has become virtually bankrupt.

Nevertheless it's probably fair to point out that just five seasons ago the club defeated Leeds United 2-0 at Edgar Street in Division One.

Next season, unless a miracle occurs on the pitch, Hereford United could be playing the likes of Brackley Town and Leamington in Conference North.

Investment of some description in the club is desparately required. It's reported that at least £200,000 is needed to ensure this season can be completed. Much of that money is for players and staff wages.

Last Thursday chairman David Keyte told BBC Hereford and Worcester that he is in discussions with three interested parties about putting money into the club or even a possible takeover.

That interview was recorded before the Hereford United Supporters Trust threw their hat into the ring. HUST are hoping to raise the £200,000 required to clear the immediate debts but that is dependent on Keyte and the rest of the board standing down and gifting their loans and shares.

One thing is crystal clear. HUST will put the football first. The same can't be said of any other investors. After all, why take on a club with debts of well over £1M unless they can spin off the football club and take any profit from the two ends of the stadium. HUST, however, are not looking for profit.

If developers get their hands on Hereford United and in due time the Bulls get back on their feet and are challenging for promotion into Division Two, the ground might not be big enough without punitive expenditure.

So, in my opinion, HUST's plan is currently the best one for the future of Hereford United.

It will be hard work trying to raise the £200,000 but if chairman Keyte and his board publically back HUST then it will be that much easier to reach the target.

And it would show that Keyte, who stands to lose a lot of money whatever happens, wants to see the best for the great football club.
