Excellent Start To Appeal Said Keyte

David Keyte has come out fighting this afternoon after a BBC Midlands interview he gave on Friday was edited down to just a couple of sentences which he felt were taken out of context.

His aim was to ensure supporters knew that Hereford United wasn't going bust and the 1-0 win over Cambridge was just the tonic the club needed.

Chairman David Keyte Speaking To Supporters At Half-Time
At half time he spoke to supporters and later gave a live interview to BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"Marvellous Christmas present for the fans, tough game top of the table and we've done what we can do," said the Hereford United chairman.

"I thought the first half an hour was excellent, probably our best first half hour of the season.

"Hung on a bit at the end, it was the reverse of the away fixture and it shows we can do it against the top sides."

Season ticket holders were asked to pay to watch the game.

"£6,500 donated today which is marvelous and we've got the on-line facility through the shop which has done about £3,500.

"So we're well on the way to £10,000 which is an excellent start.

"We've always said it's all about the football on the pitch and I think we've given some excitement to the fans today and a win.

"I hope a few more will come out next Saturday (kick-off 7.30pm) for a Christmas night out and the Kiddy match on New Years Day.

"They'll bring 700 or 800 I expect and why not beat Kidderminster as well.

"We believe the £35k target is realistic if enough people share the load.

"We are a football club for fans. Every football club is only as strong as its support base.

"We've got an incredible history which other clubs can't boast and we don't want to lose that, we don't intend to lose that but it makes it a lot easier if 3 or 4000 people feel they still support Hereford United and £10, £5 will help us on our way.

"As a club full stop at this level it is nigh on impossible (to make the numbers work).

"At Conference level there is no outside funding to speak of, it is impossible to make a financial case for it.

"We feel we are still a League club. The Cambridge people said you are a League club. The whole set-up is all but the performance on the pitch and league position which is what it's all about.

"So part-time would be a big decision for us to make. It would save very little.

"The off-pitch developments have to be pushed through. The gate money, season ticket money does not bring much more than 35 to 40% of the total you need.

"We still need it, we need more, we want the fans to come out, we know we've got to give them some football to watch and come out for.

"The off-field stuff is essential and that's what we continue to push at."
