AFC Hornchurch were formed in 2005 following the demise of
Hornchurch FC. The original club can
trace its history back to 1923 when they were formed as Upminster
Wanderers. A name change to Hornchurch
and Upminster FC was followed, in 1961, to a further change to Hornchurch
FC. “The Stadium” in Upminster has been
their home since 1953.
In 1974/75 they reached the fifth round of the inaugural FA
Vase competition and just after the turn of the Millennium a “European
Investment Company” provided funds for the redevelopment of the ground, the
clubhouse and the intention of building a team fit for The Conference. They duly arrived in Conference South at the
beginning of season 2004/5 complete with newly appointed, chequebook waiving
Garry Hill as manager. Sadly for
Urchins fans the extravagant spending on players from higher divisions was
unsustainable and the widely predicted demise came when owners The Carthium
Group ceased trading and The Club entered administration in January 2005. Hill and all contracted players left The Club
almost immediately but they hung-on for a respectable finish before re-forming
the following season in the Essex Senior League.
Hornchurch now play their football in the Ryman Football
League Premier Division and defeated Wealdstone 6-1 at home in the 3rd
Qualifying round to set up this ties with The Bulls.
The Stadium has a capacity of around 3500 with 1000
seated. Bulls' fans have been allocated
the river side of the ground, which provides both seated and standing accommodation. Admission has been agreed at £10 for adults,
£7 for concessions, £4 12-16 y/o’s and £1 for U12’s.
HUISA – departs from Radford’s at 8.30am with a fare of £23
(non-members £25). Seats can be booked
through The Club office (08442 761939).
BY CAR – Approach the M25 from either the M4 or M40. Leave the M25 at J29 to join the A127
towards London. Come off at the next major turn-off (signposted to Upminster)
and turn left into Hall Lane. Follow this road for about a mile and a half,
passing Upminster station on your left, until you come to a major crossroads
with traffic lights. Turn right at the lights into St Mary's Lane. Continue
down the hill and take the second turning on the left (Bridge Avenue). The
stadium is found about 200 yards down Bridge Avenue on the right. The Oxford A40/M40/M25clockwise route covers
a distance of about 170 miles and you should allow at least three and a half
hours. Postcode for SatNavs is RM14
2LX.
PARKING – There is a sizeable car park at the ground with
Street parking also available apart from in the street immediately behind the
Riverside.
TRAIN – Trains to Upminster run from Fenchurch Street. From
Paddington it might be as well to take a Bakerloo Line tube to Baker Street, a
Jubilee line to West Ham then the overground to Upminster. The ground is a ten-minute walk from
Upminster Station. The normal District
Line route is not available due to maintenance work over the weekend.
ALEHOUSES – The Windmill near the away entrance to the
ground seems the best bet although Upminster offer several semi-decent
alternatives.
CHIP SHOP – The Golden Fish is about 60 yards from The
Windmill on the other side of the road.
