Somewhat surprisingly The Bulls got off to a slow start in their Boxing Day fixtures following their election to The Football League in 1972. Despite rising rapidly through the leagues to the heady heights of League 2 (now The Championship), it was not until 1978 when they were back in Division 4 that they recorded their first Boxing Day win with a 2-0 away win at Stockport County.
1988 brought a 2-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers with a 4-2 victory over Newport County the following season. The early nineties saw a couple of wins against Wrexham before the best-forgotten 7-1 mauling at the hands of Mansfield at Fieldmill in 1994.
The first season back in non-league (1997) provided a win over The Harriers when Neil Grayson powered home a spot kick after Richard Leadbeater was felled in the box.
2001 and 2002 both saw 1-0 wins over Telford courtesy of goals from Scott Goodwin and Steve Guinan. Then in 2003 a Rob Purdie Christmas cracker from the edge of the box beat James Bittner in the Exeter goal before the current Bulls’ stopper was dismissed for bringing down Paul Parry in game that was live on Sky.
Sadly, the 2007 win away at Macclesfield is the most recent Boxing Day victory when Theo Robinson managed to stay onside to convert.
