Preview: Bulls vs Southend

The Bulls face Southend United in their first home game with Richard O'Kelly in charge.

The two sides met on the opening day of the season, with the pre-season promotion contenders Southend sneaking a 1-0 win through the battering ram antics of Bilel Moshni. The Shrimpers are defending a record of ten straight wins against the Bulls. On March 19th, 1986, the Bulls won 2-1 at Edgar Street but it was the last success for 26 years.

The Bulls go out to demonstrate their ability to retain their Football League status after only dropping two points in their last three games. A fresh wave of confidence is around Edgar Street, but that confidence needs the fans to attend on Saturday and cheer the Bulls to victory. The club needs fans to dig deep into their sparse resources to give O'Kelly every chance of pulling the club around. If you can get to Edgar Street on Saturday, you should do. With the loan deadline approaching next Thursday, every penny through the gates, into the 50/50 draw, and over the bars and club shop will count towards the war chest at the club's disposal.

Southend's 12 match unbeaten run earlier in the season propelled them into top spot, but that is now a distant memory after having collected only one win in the last five games. They've managed only four goals in that run, six less than the Bulls, with the volatile - but effective - Moshni still missing since his latest indiscretions at Morecambe saw him make his own way home. Top League scorer Liam Dickinson will also miss the game after being ruled out for the season, leaving the Shrimpers without their two most potent goal threats.

Hereford United vs Southend United, Edgar Street, Saturday 17th March, 3.00pm.
