News Round-Up

Northampton will own a Rugby League side after their bid for one of four new franchises was successful. The side will begin operating from 2013, playing through the summer at Sixfields. Meanwhile, new manager Aidy Boothroyd has told the press he will cut his current playing staff. He has inherited 30 players, six of which are on short term deals or loans until January.

Both Barnet and Crewe have spoken in favour of moving Saturday games to Friday or Monday nights. Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous says his side gets gates 15% higher when they play on a Friday, while Crewe boss Steve Davis reckons they need to do something to stem falling gates with attendances at Gresty Road halving over the past five years.

Bradford co-chairman Mark Lawn says they are still interested in Charlton striker Paul Benson, and that they tried to renegotiate their deadline-day deal due to the forward's medical. The Bantams are reported to have increased their initial bid to £130,000 before the medical uncovered issues. Cambridge have agreed a contract settlement with midfielder Steven Connors. They originally sacked the player just weeks after signing a two year deal, but the FA overturned the decision.

Macclesfield have appointed developers St Modwen to construct their proposed new stadium. The 7,000 capacity 'low carbon' stadium will be built on a 130 acre site near their current Moss Rose home.
