Sillett's Men Top The Table

Twenty years ago this week, a returning Hereford United legend had taken his Bulls side top of the Division Four table.

John Sillett, who had previously taken the Bulls to the Division Three title in 1976, returned as an FA Cup winning manager to the Edgar Street hotseat. Alongside player-coach Greg Downs, the pair had early success when, on September 17th 1991, their Bulls beat York 2-1 to top the table for the first time in seven years.

Goals from Simon Brain and Peter Heritage in front of a healthy crowd of 3,540 earned the points to take the top spot from Barnet on goal difference with York's goal that night only the second conceded all season.

However the fun didn't last. Defender Russell Bradley, the club's reigning Player of the Year, was sold to Halifax to 'further his career', and veteran Mel Pejic played his last game for the Bulls after an 11 year Edgar Street career when a January move to Wrexham went through.

The Bulls ended the season in their customary 17th place, and with a final home crowd of just 1,297 during a run that saw them lose their last five matches. Downs replaced Sillett that summer as boss, and immediately had to cut the wage bill to stem losses.
