As reported earlier today on BN, Rotherham football club are to receive a £5M loan from their local council towards the building of their new £17M stadium.
Rotherham had to leave their Millmore ground at the end of the 07/08 season after failing to agree a new deal with the owners, a scrap metal company.
They then moved to the Don Valley Stadium, pictured, close to Sheffield. However that venue was built for athletics not football.
There is only one stand which is situated some distance from the pitch and watching a game was difficult, particularily for away fans who were sat at the one end of the stand.
Rotherham Council view the new ground as an important part of the Rotherham Renaissance Scheme which is expected to have an investment of at least £40M in the next 25 years.
Roger Stone, who leads the council, told the BBC: "The terms of the agreement mean that there will be no cost to Rotherham's council taxpayers, but our residents, schools, businesses and voluntary and community groups will reap the benefits for years to come - by using the facilities or by the stadium generating more town centre visitors on match days."
