Five Players Face Betting Charges

Five players have been charged by the FA with betting on their match with Bury last season.

Bookies reported 'irregular betting patterns' on the 3rd May match, which Bury won 2-0, with Paddy Power telling the press at the time: "the pattern of betting stinks to high heaven to be honest."

Accrington players Jay Harris, David Mannix, Robert Williams and Peter Cavanagh and Bury's Andrew Mangan are alleged to have placed bets on Bury to win the match. Mannix is alleged to have placed stakes to the value of approximately £4,000; Mangan £3,500; Harris £2,000; Williams £1,000; and Cavanagh on a £5 accumulator. In addition, Harris, now at Chester with Mannix, has been charged in relation to betting on a game involving his new club and another two League Two fixtures.

Cavanagh has also been charged with further breaches in relation to his betting on another Accrington Stanley match in which he played and on a number of other League Two matches. All five have until 23 April to respond to the charges. Leighton McGivern, another Accrington player, was charged in March 2009 in relation to his failure to provide The FA with information requested during the course of the investigation. He has denied the charge.

The details of the other games that are alleged to have been involved have not been disclosed.

All six players listed face lengthy bans if found guilty, and could face criminal charges. The 1964 betting case that saw eight footballers banned for life also saw ten people receive jail sentences of up to four years for fraud, while an early case from 1915 saw seven players banned for life for rigging a Man Utd-Liverpool match.
