The Barrels wins CAMRA Prize

A Pub in the center of Hereford often frequented by Hereford United supporters has been declared a joint winner of the 2008 award from the Herefordshire’s Campaign for Real Ale.

The Barrels in St Owens Street is no stranger to the award as it has won it on no less than five separate times in the last 16 years.

“The Barrels is rightly now a part of Hereford’s folklore. Many people from outside the county often think of the Barrels when they think of Hereford," said Mark Haslam of CAMRA as reported by the Hereford Journal.

“This award shows that we must never take all the hard work that has been put in to achieve this for granted.”

The Journal goes on to report that The Barrels, which is run by Stoke-Lacy based Wye Valley Brewery, is considered by many to be a Hereford institution. It is the only city pub that warrants a mention in the Rough Guide to Great Britain.

CAMRA judges were impressed by how the pub had grown and developed without losing its charm, character and friendliness.

The other joint winner was the Green Dragon Inn at Bishops Frome
