The Importance of Off-Pitch Income

It is difficult to survive as a club in the lower reaches of football without a useful contribution from non-football activities.

Hereford United suffers to a degree from that problem although in fairness they have managed a lot better than many other clubs with their very prudent house-keeping.

But as gates drop and therefore income, the current trading year at Edgar Street may fail to show a profit.

One club in the Conference has just released their accounts for the year to the end of last May. And the results are quite good but only because of off-pitch income.

Burton Albion, the current home of former Bull Tony James, has made a profit of £150,000 on a turnover of £1.3M.

Gate income was £400,000. However commercial activities and sponsorship was a massive £907,000 or nearly 70% of their income.

"This is the beauty of having a stadium that can generate income, as well as offering a superb facility for the benefit of the community," said chairman Ben Robinson.
