A particularly interesting article by Matthew Engel in this months Herefordshire Life magazine tells of the football life and times of Bulls' boss Graham Turner.
Once again, Turner comments on the low gates. For reasons even he can't fathom, league crowds this season have actually been lower than they were in non-league football. "We haven't got the population. It's one of the smallest places in the League. As a percentage of the population we probably get as many as Aston Villa, but that doesn't help." Turner also thinks that Herefordians don't appreciate how much it means having United here. "We bring more publicity to Hereford than any tourist development could ever do."
When reminded that he was in the enviable position of not being able to be sacked, GT commented "I don’t think there's anything in that at all. If the results went wrong, I wouldn't be sacked. But, the supporters asked me to stay when we were first relegated and they'll be the ones who'll tell me when it's time to go." He admitted that he still has the ambition to manage again higher up the divisions - with Hereford or anyone else - and if a big club asked him he may not say no "if I could be sure the Club was left in good hands".
The article concludes that there is no doubt which side of the double job exercises him most. You can see it on Saturdays, when he much prefers to spend his time with the players than glad-ragging it in the Boardroom. "I'm a football man" he says "not a Chairman-man".
Herefordshire Life is published by Archant Life Midlands and is available from newsagents and some supermarkets (I bought mine in Morrisons) at £2.50.
