Baker Hopes For Chester Talks

Former Chester director Paul Baker is hoping for talks with departed chairman Stephen Vaughan in the next couple of days to sort out the future of the club.

Vaughan's departure was announced 15 minutes before kick-off on Saturday, with most of the attending crowd in the dark until news of the radio announcement filtered across the terraces.

Baker posted a lengthy message on fans site Devachat late on Saturday night claiming that he had agreed a deal to buy half the club for £240,000 and wipe out the bulk of the debts. Baker, who is the club's main sponsor, is the second biggest creditor behind Vaughan and the deal would have seen both become 50/50 partners in the club. The post was removed quickly by the site admin.

He told the Chester Evening Chronicle he had been in contact with Vaughan: "I am fully aware of the situation regarding Stephen Vaughan resigning as chairman and director, but I now want to sit down with him and discuss matters for the well being of the football club. I am hoping to meet and talk to Stephen within the next 48 hours."

Two seperate companies had made approaches to buy the club in the last few months. The first, a Spanish based businessman who was born in Cheshire, failed to prove he had the funding while the second offered less to Vaughan than Baker did.

Manager Bobby Williamson has also spoken about Vaughan's departure, admitting that a lack of cash would hamper his plans: "I've got plans for the new year and want to bolster the squad with some fresh faces but I'll have to await on developments to see how my plans figure, I would like to think that I'll be able to press ahead with those plans."
