It has emerged that the Board at Hereford United took the decision several months ago that if the club was to advance it had to speculate to accumulate. This is the reason, said manager Graham Turner, that the club has invested in a higher standard of players.
"We've invested a lot more heavily in wages this season, so the quality of the player [reflects this]," Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester.
"You look through the backgrounds of some of the players in the side; people like Clint Easton, Karl Broadhurst and one or two others in there - they are a far more experienced squad of players than we had in the past."
The confirmation that the Bulls are spending more on wages this season means that the club needs all the income it can pull in to balance the books and probably, for example, explains Turner's understandable reluctance, at present, to invest in a better youth set-up at the club.
Meanwhile Turner appears confident going into this weekend's game at Peterborough.
"Peterborough now and then Darlington, they pose two real challenges for us and we've got every confidence in what we can do," he commented.
"If we play the game we can live with the good sides up there. If we do perform well we can cause anybody problems."
