There will be some head scratching done amongst some of the favourites, with three of them suffering shock opening day defeats.
Accrington beat Wycombe 1-0 at Adams Park to complete a smash and grab raid with Wycombe misfiring in front of goal without top striker Jermain Easter. MK Dons played their first game at their new stadium but saw Bury's Andy Bishop score twice to secure the points, while Lincoln were tanked 4-0 at home to Shrewsbury.
Less unsurprisingly, Peterboro demonstrated their potential dominance with a 3-0 win over Rochdale. Darlington, using Rob Purdie only as a sub, beat Wrexham 2-0 despite having keeper Andy Oakes sent off while Stockport, again hosting new-boys on the opening day, battled to a 1-0 win over Dagenham.
Bradford and Macclesfield, Brentford and Mansfield, and Grimsby and Notts County all settled for 1-1 draws while Chester, drawing the lowest crowd of the day, drew 0-0 with Chesterfield. Morecambe delayed their kick-off for a 'bumper' crowd of 3,633 but could only get a goalless draw with Barnet.
