Gavin Mahon has been looking back at his time at Edgar Street.
Now captain at Watford, 30 year old Mahon was a member of Hereford's squad that dropped out of the Football League in 1997. He moved onto Brentford in November 1998 for a total fee of about £130,000.
"I remember the day clearly because I left Wolves and had about four clubs to choose from.
"I chose Hereford because of the (former Wolves boss) Graham Turner connections there.
"Before I knew it we were playing Brighton in the final game of the season to determine who would stay up and we went down.
"It was emotional and I had a lump in my throat but my girlfriend was there at the time and I couldn't burst out crying. She would have probably left me!
"One minute you are thinking about playing in the Football League and the next you are playing Leek Town, but that is football.
"I think it was probably worse than losing the semi-final (in 2003) because I was only a young man at the time and trying to get on the road to having a decent career.
"I was doing well in the reserves at Wolves and playing with good players and before I knew it I was playing non-league.
"Would I have considered quitting? If I had played two or three seasons down there I might have done but it was only about 14 months before Brentford came in for me."
Next Saturday Watford play Manchester United in a FA Cup semi-final.
