Charles the First

This comes from today's Telegraph:

Almost two years to the day after John Charles passed away in a Turin hospital, the racehorse named after him justified warm favouritism to win a maiden race at Wolverhampton this week.

The equine John Charles is owned by Mel Davies, a fellow Welshman who persuaded bookmakers Ladbrokes to place a £500 bet on the horse every time he runs in his first season. Profits go to the Gentle Giant Trust, set up in 2002 to ensure the John Charles example of fair play will always be remembered by young people.

Davies, however, missed the four-year-old's victory as he was on holiday in the United States. He was represented in the winner's enclosure by Ricky George, a close friend and a player at Hereford United when Charles was manager between 1966 and 1972.

"I was honoured to have taken the field with the great man," George said, "and privileged to have led in the horse that bears his name on his maiden victory."
