Watson reviving Southport

Liam Watson took over the Haig Avenue reigns in October 2003 after joining from Runcorn. A young, vibrant, ambitious manager looking to bring success back to Haig Avenue. Had Football League experience after signing for John Beck at Preston for £60,000 along with his now assistant at Haig Avenue Neil Whalley. Both signed from Warrington Town.

Liam has a vaste wealth of non league knowledge having managed Runcorn as player manager. A renowned striker who has England semi pro honours, during his Runcorn spell netted over 100 goals. Has served Marine, Accrington Stanley and Witton during his non league career.

Fans have got behind the no punches pulled Watson who totally transformed his playing staff in a whirlind six months.

Kicks off this season with real belief in his new look squad.

Watson was honoured with winning the Nationwide North October Manager of the Month. Southport went six matches unbeaten in October winning five and drawing one.

"This is an award for the players and the suppporters who have backed us superbly. It is an honour for the club because it shows we are progressing. We are going well in the league and have reached the FA Cup first round, but the journey has only just begun," commented Watson last week.

Southport are currently third in the Conference North.

Last night Southport defeated Gateshead 2-1 in a FA Trophy first round replay. Terry Fearns scored both goals for Southport.
