Revenge for the Bulls
Two goals from Paul Parry just after the break and another from Rob Sawyers in injury time gave Hereford United a well deserved win over Gravesend this afternoon by 3-0, the same score as occured in their earlier meeting this season when Gravesend won.
Sawyers seals
emphatic victory
Hereford
United 3 - 0 Gravesend & Northfleet
Missing three first teamers, Hereford
United still recorded a convincing 3-0 over lowly
Gravesend & Northfleet.
On-loan Jay Lovett, from Brentford, came in for Richard Teesdale at right-back, whilst Rob Sawyers and Rob Purdie came in for the suspended duo of Danny Williams and Steve Guinan respectively.
The first half started brightly, with Paul Parry rounding goalkeeper Jamie Turner on the right edge of his area, before hitting a shot from an acute angle across goal, and out of play. At the other end, Louie Evans smashed a ball onto Matt Baker's bar following a cross from the Gravesend left.
Play was held up on three seperate occasions in the first half, when Parry, Jamie Pitman and Gravesend's Jimmy Jackson required treatment. Hereford, though, continued to have the best of the play as a lively attacking duo of Purdie and John Grant did well. On nineteen minutes, Ben Smith should have put Hereford into the lead but he fired wide from ten yards, and Purdie's blocked shot two minutes later came as a result of a long ball from Tony James at the back.
In the dying minutes of the half, Hereford's Grant forced Turner into another fine save and Purdie also tried his luck from the edge of the box. Sawyers struck the post in added time, with Parry's rebound deflected wide.
It took just forty seconds of the second period to see Hereford go into the lead. Grant got hold of the ball on the edge of the box and laid it off to Paul Parry, who smashed a low shot into the bottom corner. Two minutes later, Parry gained possession from a poor clearance, rounded Turner and made it 2-0.
Baker was called into action at the other end when Tostao Kwashi hit a twenty-five yard effort goalwards, while Ben White, making his Gravesend debut, smashed a low effort into Baker's hands from long-range later in the half. Then Ben Smith had a go, with fifteen minutes left. His right-footed shot from the edge of the box made Turner pull off a superb diving save as Hereford kept up the pressure.
It paid off. In the last minute, Parry swung over a cross from the left, Smith knocked it back from the byline for Sawyers to fire home and secure all three points.
Hereford jump to fifth, and are back in the play-off places ahead of next week's crunch trip to Morecambe, whilst the 46 Gravesend fans go home disappointed.
