National League North club abruptly cancel experienced striker's contract days into new season

Gary Madine, centre, has left Spennymoor Town just days into the new season
Spennymoor Town's vastly experienced striker Gary Madine has had his contract cancelled just a month after dropping down to National League North.

The 34-year-old Gateshead-born striker boasts over 100 goals in just under 500 appearances in the EFL, with previous clubs including Carlisle United, Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool.

But the frontman, who helped Cardiff City into the Premier League, has realised he no longer has the passion to play football.

Having dropped down from National League Hartlepool United to join Spennymoor at step two at the end of July, he started in wins over Hereford and Radcliffe but was absent from Saturday's 5-0 thumping at home to King's Lynn.

But less than two weeks into the new season, after "amicable discussions" with Moors boss Graeme Lee, his contract has been cancelled.

Madine said: “Unfortunately, I’ve realised that I no longer have that fire in my belly that has helped my have the career I have had, and I don’t feel it’s right to collect a wage from such good people when I know my heart isn’t 100% in it.

“I wish everyone at Spennymoor all the success in the world and hope they go on to have a really enjoyable season.”

Lee added: “Gary leaves with our best wishes for the future.

“We’re sorry it’s not worked out for him the way we had hoped but we wish him well in his retirement and congratulate him on a fantastic career."
