Chester Refused Switch To Widnes

Chester have been refused permission to switch their derby with Wrexham to Widnes by the Football League.

A League spokesman said: "Our view is that we do not believe it is practical and certainly not appropriate from a competition point of view. There were a whole range of issues, including the fact the same police force would have been involved if the match was played at Widnes."

Chester were also unable to confirm that the Halton Stadium was licensed by the Home Office for senior football - a requirement for Football League matches.

Central to the request to move the game was the decision of the local Safety Advisory Committee, comprising of Police, Council, and League officials, to move the game to 12 noon on December 28th - a Wednesday lunchtime that isn't a bank holiday - meaning hundreds of fans would be unable to attend.

Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan has recently bought into Widnes Vikings Rugby League club, and has been elected to their board with the intention to take over the Chairman's post.
